The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd
The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was incorporated on the 15th of September, 1871. It was formed by a consortium of army and naval officers for the supply of goods to its members at the lowest possible rates. This model was based on that used by two earlier co-operatives - the Civil Service Supply Association and the Civil Service Co-operative Society.
Many items were made to order and special note is given in copies of the catalogue reminding the purchaser that they are sent barometers and other delicate glass instruments at member’s risk. The catalogues were released twice a year and featured intricate illustrations for items such as barometers, jewellery and tableware.
