J Casartelli and Son, Manchester
An Italian immigrant in 1834 at the age of 11,
Guiseppe Luigi Casartelli changed his name to Joseph Louis Casartelli and joined his relative's barometer and thermometer making business in Liverpool.
Around the middle of the 19th century he was running his own business bought from his brother-in-laws, at 43 Market Street, Manchester, producing mechanical and optical equipment including telescopes and microscopes, camera equipment and microphotographs.
Joseph’s second son, Joseph Henry, began working for his father around 1882 and was made a partner in the business in 1896 changing the name to 'J. Casartelli and Son'.
Joseph Louis Casartelli died on March 20, 1900.
The business moved to 18 Brown Street, Manchester in 1922, acquired the Louis Casartelli business of Liverpool in 1929, but was liquidated during the Great Depression in 1933.
