Gieves Ltd, London
Gieves Ltd, London
Royally appointed and originally established in 1785 trading as 'Gieve Matthews Seagrove Ltd', Gieves has a rich history as outfitters to the British Royal Navy. Following the World War I, the company changed it's name to Gieves Ltd trading from 21 Old Bond Street, London.
The shop was bombed during the blitz in 1940 destroying many historical records. However, ledgers have since been recovered recording many famous patrons for the period 1920-60; Charlie Chaplin, J.P.Morgan, Sir Oswald Mosley, Grand Duke Dimitri (who aided in the murder of Rasputin), David Niven, Laurence Olivier and Winston Churchill to name but a few.
Gieves Ltd acquired the equally reputable and highly regarded British Army outfitters Hawkes & Co. (established in 1771) in 1974 to become Gieves and Hawkes, still trading today from No.1 Saville Row, London, albeit under the ownership of a Hong Kong property business.
