Cooke, Troughton & Simms Ltd

Cooke, Troughton & Simms of York, was an instrument manufacturer during the early to late 20th century. Merging the T. Cooke & Sons business with Troughton & Simms, these two companies combined nearly a century of instrument making expertise into one greater company. Becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Vickers in 1924, the company was poised for greater things.

After a field test at Tavistock on Dartmoor in 1926, the European opposition had given British firms such as Cooke, Troughton & Simms a chance to improve their theodolite, whose development became known as the Tavistock type. This used the internal glass circles of rival models by Wild of Switzerland had pioneered.

Continuing to create a range of precision microscopes and surveying equipment, the company survived until 1988.
