Matthew Berge was foreman to the renowned Jesse Ramsden for three decades, learning his trade and gaining the craft required to continue making precision instruments upon Ramsden’s death in 1800.

Trading from his late master’s property at 199 Piccadilly, Berge gathered the funds and resources to pay off outstanding debt and undertake repairs to the building.

Berge continued to trade at this site until his own death in 1819. Initially signing his telescopes with ‘Late Ramsden’, Berge stopped this practice after 1805.
