A Victorian period explorer, missionary and physicist, David Livingstone was born on the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland in 1813. Living until 1873, Livingstone's obsession with finding the source of the Nile as a means to end the slave trade in East Africa, led to further Christian missionary initiatives after his death. During his 1871 expedition, his meeting with author and explorer Henry M. Stanley (1841 - 1904) led to the famous greeting "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
