Under the nom de plume George Eliot, Mary Ann Evans (1819 - 1880) was a journalist, writer and poet, born in Warwickshire during the latter stages of the Georgian period. Her most famous novels included Middlemarch (1872) and Daniel Deronda (1876) which captured a provincial view of life. As a collection of poetry, Jubal was written concurrently with Middlemarch.
