This is an antique verger's bible box. An English, oak carved ecclesiastical case, dating to the William III period, circa 1700.

Fascinating carved box, with country provincial craftsmanship
Displays a desirable aged patina and in original order
Oak stocks present a profusely carved appearance
Rich caramel and deep chestnut hues accentuate the case
Top panel engraved with a monogram for E.W.
Canted lid presents a square panel with foliate relief
Scrolled flowerheads and vines adorn the front and side panels
Dressed with an iron lock escutcheon with long clasp — key absent
Opens to reveal a clean interior with a pair of drawers
Drawers held securely with twisting latch handles
