This is an antique presentation box. A Japanese, lacquered lidded case with hand painted Oriental decor, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900.

Superb Japanese interest with a delicate hand-painted village scene
Displays a desirable aged patina throughout
Lacquered finish presents a beautifully contrasted ground for the painted lid
Striking orange interior redolent of cinnabar in clean, presentable order
Prize label to lid reverse, awarded for attendance in 1909
