Antique Framed Indenture, English, Vellum, Document, 17th Century, Dated 1671
Our Stock # 18.9565
This is an antique framed indenture. An English, vellum document in modern frame, dating to the 17th century and later, dated to 1671.
Issued in three parts, indentures were legal documents cut with wavy edges, meaning two copies could be matched for authenticity. This wavy shaped cut, known as toothed gave part of the document's name - the indenture. The third part - the tripartite indenture - would remain with the court once an agreement had been reached.
- Fascinating legal indenture issued in the 17th century
- Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order
- Hand-written across 52 lines in quill ink on wavy cut vellum
- Vellum is historically chosen for its long-term legibility - said to be up to 1000 years
- Issued on February 8th 1671, on behalf of a William Faulkner
- Superb calligraphy leading letter adds visual interest to the document
- Tastefully presented in a later, burr walnut and gilt finished frame
- Dressed to the rear with mounting rope for ease of hanging
This is a delightful antique framed indenture, a fascinating legal record from 17th century England - the indenture was issued in the City of Coventry in 1671. Presented in a quality modern frame and ready to display.
